Internet Group to Rescue Dog Shelter
(PRWEB) January 11, 2006 -- After reading the article in People Magazine and seeing the story on The Geraldo "At Large" Show, (http://www.dogsafety.net/geraldo) a group of Internet marketers is joining in with the children's "SOS" (Save our Shelter) campaign to come to the rescue of the Dalhart Animal Wellness Group and Sanctuary or D.A.W.G.S., as its called. Run by Diane Trull and the kids of Dalhart, the city has given the no-kill animal shelter six months to get off of the two acres of property that was donated to them - by the city of Dalhart, Texas.
"The UnderDogs", a recently formed group of dog lovers, have started an Internet campaign called Dog Safety Net. (http://www.dogsafety.net). Capitalizing on the recent popularity of pixel advertising as highlighted in Yahoo News and other media, they're hoping to be able to raise money to help save D.A.W.G.S. before their eviction deadline of March 31, 2006.
It is not your normal 'save our shelter' story. What makes this particular shelter unique is that it was started by kids. Yes, fourth graders at Allyn Finch Intermediate School in Dalhart, Texas, started it in 2003 when Diane Trull, their teacher, read to the class a story of the local animal shelter's plea for adoptions or the dogs would be killed. It is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization so donations are tax deductible.
The no-kill shelter is a haven for dogs and students alike. Their slogan, "Making a Difference one Child at time, one Animal at a time" tells the story. The kids could be sitting at home in front of the TV, playing video games or doing something fun. Instead, some of these kids work at the shelter 12 hours a day - feeding, watering, cleaning, playing with and caring for the dogs, muddy from head to toe during the rainy season, wrapped head to toe in winter gear during the cold, learning lessons that will take them far in life.
"It isn't right to take this away from these kids", says Debbie Boynton, spokesperson for the UnderDogs. "Before the no-kill shelter, dogs were killed by the hundreds each year in Dalhart. Some people there have no respect for the lives of dogs. These kids have been told, "take this dog or I'll shoot it", puppies have been left tied to the gate by barbed wire, the kids encounter some adults that are scornful of their efforts. I believe this is a situation where the kids are teaching the adults values much needed in this world. They need our help."
