Emotions run high when thinking about getting a pet but we never seem to consider the work involved with house training or crate training a dog. We prefer to see well behaved dogs walking nicely beside their owner and never stop to think how much effort went into teaching correct leash behavior.
You may have been interested in a working or hunting dog to be a help in your life. Whatever the reason, crate training probably didn't figure into the overall thought process but it was more about all the positive things having a pet can bring. Remember those dreams and desires as the only way to have a great companion is to be able to have them be with you and that means being in your home.
Make no mistake, crate training a dog is the first order of business when you first get a new puppy or even older adult dog. By crate training your dog, you end up with a well behaved friend. And contrary to what some claim, it's not considered cruel or difficult, nor is it kenneling or storing your pet in a cage.
Don't make the mistake of leaving house training for later. Potty accidents and bad habits developed by your puppy can increase the difficulty in having success with crate training a dog later. You want to limit the chance of your dog relieving himself in your home. It only takes about 5 seconds for a dog to find an acceptable place, squat and you end up with a mess. So if you cannot keep watch 100% of the time, your pet needs to be confined. This idea forms the basis for successful potty training.

Dogs typically can pick out a place to go and start peeing in only a few seconds, so it's important that you are attentive and all times when your pet is out of his crate. It's absolutely critical that you stay attentive until you have broken any bad behaviors crated before you started house training. Depending on the effort you give to break those habits and create new behaviors will determine the amount of time required for success. Once your dog knows what you want him to do, and where you want him to do it bathroom breaks become a simple matter of opening the back door to letting them out.
Crate training a dog is key if you want to have a reliably trained companion. Start the training off right by limiting the possibility of developing bad behaviors before they happen. One good idea is use a lightweight leash to control your puppy when bringing them inside your home. This way you can move them directly into the crate.
Control in owning a pet is actually extremely important in having the enjoyment of a well behaved dog. It's simply not an option to allow the pup to have the run of your home and defecate anywhere they please because you are unwilling to use good housebreaking practices. If you aren't willing to adequately train your puppy, please don't get one!
Crate training a dog is a very important time in owning a puppy as it determines the difference between a life with a fantastic companion or a time of constant frustrations and anger toward your best friend. Take the time necessary to learn how to effectively complete housebreaking so your puppy can enjoy a life of being close with you no matter where your travels my lead.
So take the time to learn how to teach your puppy what is expected of him. You won't be sorry and the lifetime of enjoyment can't be measured.
